Field test with Hemo Plus Forte E

Objective
To measure the effectiveness of Hemo Plus Forte E treating hematopoietic disorders.

Experiment design
Animals: Four horses (2 Arabs, 2 Anglo-Arabs - all thoroughbred racehorses) of healthy condition between three and six years old were used. These animals were numbered from one to four. Horses numbers one and two were males and numbers three and four females. We administered HemoPlusForte to horses number one and four by IM via and to horses two and three by IV via.

Timetable of application
3 doses of Hemo Plus Forte E were administered every 48 hours as indicated in the attached prospectus.

Timetable of samplings
A blood sample by puncture from the jugular vein was taken pre-treatment and another taken in the same way 10 days post-treatment.

Hemogram
A complete hemogram was carried out with each sample and paying special attention to the number of red blood cells, the hematocrit (Hct), the concentration of haemoglobin and the Mean cell hemoglobin (MCH). All these variables are of special interest in the diagnosis of anaemic processes.

Results
Table 1 shows that only horse two had three of the four measured variables within the normal range for the species at the beginning of the study (only MCH was low). Horses one and three had two variables under the lowest limit which is accepted as normal (hemoglobin and MCH). Horse four showed three variables under the norm (Hct,, hemoglobin and MCH) The post-treatment results show that in horses one and four the values of hemoglobin and MCH slightly increased in relation to the pre-treatment values, while in horse two all measured values decreased and in horse three all measured parameters improved.

Conclusions

  • The pre-treatment results show that three out of the four horses had a certain degree of anemia.
  • The post-treatment results show that three out of four horses improved in at least two of the measured variables.
  • The only horse which did not show any improvement was horse two which was precisely the only horse which did not show any signs of anemia at the beginning of the test.
  • Despite the fact that improvement was observed in three animals, only horse three practically recovered almost completely ,while horses one and four show values under normal ones for the species. Perhaps the short period of treatment did not allow these animals to recover completely.
